The story actually begins way back in 1992. I had a real job back then, professional, suit and tie, a secretary.... the whole works. Then, well, I'm not sure why, I got this crazy idea that I wanted to travel. I had enough money saved to last me a year or so if I lived simply, so I figured why not? I took off on the great adventure. I drove a pickup truck around the U.S., camped out in the national parks, toured the big and small cities, and visited all sorts of crazy tourist attractions. After four months or so, I left my truck at a friend's place in Texas and headed south through Mexico by bus and other public transport. I went down through Central America to Panama and then caught a flight to Venezuela. From there I went by bus on through to Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Peru, and Bolivia. My cash ran low in Bolivia so I had to fly back. Picked up the truck in Texas and drove it back home to Upstate NY.... Not bad for a first trip. And that trip set me off for good. I got the itch. I got the bug. I love to go places, see new things and have crazy adventures. I tried to go back to the professional life after that trip, but in truth, it wasn't really possible. I lasted another year and a half or so before I abandoned it all together. I had to find a way of life that gave me the freedom to travel. And thankfully, I found the stones. But hey, that's another story. Since that first trip, I've gone on seven others. I visited 35 countries on five different continents. I always travel simple. With a backpack, a tent and very little else. I stay in hostels, I camp out, I stay anywhere. I want to see everything, experience everything. And so I do. As a result, I have collected all sorts of stories that I tell my friends as we sit around the bar or the campfire. And now, I am going to attempt to do the same via computer. Tell the story of my latest trip as it happens. No, not a diary. I definitely will not giving you a daily chronicle of my every event. I will tell you a story. Which means, of course, everything I write may not exactly be true. Names may be changed to protect the guilty, details may be exaggerated for dramatic or comic effect. Important incriminating information may be left out completely. Everything is possible. I guess I'll just get started. How I get from point A to point B is yet to be determined. There will be no itinerary. I shall make it up as I go along...
